Holi Special: Tips to Consider Before and After Holi

While Holi brings a lot of joy, happiness and colors, it also ends up damaging our prized skin and hair. Most of the Holi colors embody harsh toxins, which makes our skin vulnerable to skin allergies, irritations, itching, scratching, dry brittle hair and in some cases, they also cause permanent damage to the body.

Here are few precautions to consider before going out there in the colors, for we believe that prevention is always better than cure:

A Night Before Holi:

1.    Try to play with herbal colors instead of harmful dye colors. You can also make your own at home with beetroot juice and flowers or you can buy organic herbal Holi colors from here.

2.    If your skin is dry, colors will penetrate effortlessly. So make sure you moisturize your whole body a night before with olive oil, coconut oil or jojoba oil. We recommend nyassa Cold Pressed Jojoba Body Oil. Being a waxy substance, Jojoba oil can seal in the moisture and create an effective barrier to harmful colors.

3.    Oil your hair a night before, this would not only protect your hair but will also help to get off color from your hair after the celebrations. The best option for oiling is coconut oil. We would suggest Rustic Art Organic Coconut Hair Oil. It is rich in antioxidants, and has antiviral properties that will minimize the color absorption.

4.    Oiling in places like - behind the ear, between fingertips, near fingernails is inevitable.

Before Playing Holi

1.    Before you go out to play in colors, tone you skin with a toner to close the open pores. Follow this with a generous amount of moisturizer. Closed pores and greasy skin will absorb almost no color into your skin.

2.    Protect your lips from staining and chapping by applying petroleum jelly or a good quality lip balm. We suggest cream-rich Natio Shea Butter Lip Balm, which will create a protective shield on your lips.

3.    Don't get waxing, threading, facials or skin treatment done at least 3-4 days before Holi.

4.    Never ever, let your hair open while playing Holi, put your hair in a bun or braid or you can look stylish by wearing a bandana or scarf while limiting the hair contact to colors.

5.    Trim your nails and apply a thick coat of vibrant nail color to match the vibrant Holi mood while protecting your nails from stains and breakage. Apart from this, massage your cuticles with cuticle oil.

While Playing holi

1.    Hydrate yourself before playing Holi, Drink loads of water.

2.    Keep your eyes shut when someone is applying color or throwing water balloon at you. If color enters you eye, wash it immediately with cold water. Avoid rubbing.

3.    Avoid being in direct sunlight when smeared in colors, apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out.

After Playing Holi (Most Important):

1.    Do not go to bath right after playing, especially with soaps, they have alkaline properties and capability to sabotage your skin.  Instead, first use a nice cream based cleanser to remove colors from your skin gently.  We suggest using Aloe Vera gel, turmeric or Organic Harvest Cleansing Milk. This supple cleanser will remove color by deep cleaning the skin and face.

2.    Before shampooing, apply some curd on your hair to get rid of colors. Keep it still for 15 minutes.

3.    After cleansing, go for a cold bath, as hot water can further dry up the skin. Use a mild soap or body wash to remove the color.   Iraya Stimulating Orange Scrubbing Shower Gel is a good for this purpose as it has the capability to exfoliate and remove dust and color particles gently.

4.     After keeping curd in your hair for 15 minutes, wash them with a mild creamy shampoo like Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo. It is paraben & sulphate free, and will clean your color-filled hair gently.

5.    After bathing, treat your skin with vitamin E cream or almond oil.

6.    If colors don’t come off easily, do not scrub repeatedly. Make use of ubtans. Tvam Face Pack – Ubtan would be great as it cleans the pores and removes color particles while giving a cooling effect, which prevents the skin from inflammation and burns.

7.    People with sensitive skin should apply milk and turmeric paste. It will remove color stains without causing any harsh reactions and will provide nourishment as well.

8.    Remove nail polish gently and nourish them and cuticles with petroleum jelly. We would recommend Seasoul Dead Sea Cuticle Conditioner to restore beauty of your hands and nails.

9.    If you have burning eye sensation after effects, place some cucumber slices on your eyes for a soothing effect and visit an ophthalmologist in case of a severe injury.

10.    If you have allergies or rashes, use Aloe Vera gel. Keep your skin hydrated during next few days to retrieve your glowing skin.

So, here’s wishing you all a happy and safe Holi!
